Real Madrid’s public pursuit of Hazard a mere compliment – Conte

Real Madrid’s public pursuit of Hazard a mere compliment – Conte

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte has said that Real Madrid’s pursuit of forward Eden Hazard is a compliment rather than a distraction to Chelsea.
Conte refused to be drawn into a definitive statement on the Belgium international’s future in his Friday news conference.
Asked if Chelsea is willing to consider any offers for Hazard this summer, the Italian gaffer said, “I don’t know, I know. I repeat always the same thing: now it’s important for my players to focus on the present and not look too far forward, because that’s very dangerous.
“Eden is a Chelsea player, our player, we are happy with him and he is happy with us. I don’t see problems about him.”
The public nature of Real Madrid’s pursuit is widely considered to be an attempt to unsettle Hazard, but Conte is not worried.
“This is a part of the game, to put these rumours out there and put a bit of difficulty in the mind of the players.
“But we have great experience of facing this situation, and so do my players.
“It’s normal to start rumours about our players at this stage of the season. It means we are doing a great job, so I’m happy. If Chelsea’s players are linked with other teams, it means they are doing very well.
“But I repeat: I think that, now, we stay already in a great club with great ambition. We want to build something important for the present and the future. I think we have just started [on] our path.”
Conte said he has not spoken to Hazard about the Madrid reports.
He added, “No, no. I don’t think it’s important to talk with him. I like to talk to him about this season, about the importance of this game.
“He missed the last game against Stoke City and his form, we have to check his form. But I hope he stays very well and shows great things, to play great football. I like to talk about this, not other things.”
The Belgium captain was withdrew from duty with a calf problem during the international break but Conte expects him to be in condition to play “really well” against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Hilarious names of churches you will find in Nigeria (photos)
The rate at which religion tends to find its way into virtually all that we do, has become very alarming.
However, the issue is not with the various religions, but with those who believe and follow these diverse beliefs. It is no news that everyone is free to practice whichever religion suits him or her, but it is sad to note that freedom has been abused and to a great extent has become man’s captivity.

In The Dark “ A Story Of Love , Betrayal And Survival ”

It was a court notice. A notice which stated that i was been sued by James.
****
I stood at a spot and read the letter over and over again. It was like a night mare to me and i was so confused on what could possibly make James decide to sue me. I could not even close the door as i read the heading of the letter over and over again.
I was accused of violating the right of a father to meet his kids, something i never did. Ever since i got pregnant, i never crossed part with James, not even accidentally. Right there and then, i felt like seeing James and showing him the stuffs i was made of. For him to think that he could gain an access to my kids by suing me made me more determined to fight him with my last penny. James turned his back at me when i needed him the most and he realised he had kids with me just when i was getting my life back. If i could stand on my own and fight life itself , i believed i could fight for my kids. Nothing else mattered to me apart from winning the court battle created by James.
Biodun had already put the girls to sleep and was about existing the nursery when i entered. He noticed the look on my face and he asked why i was sad.
I gave the letter to Biodun and explained what James was driving at to him. The letter specified that the court hearing would be in three months time and i was to show up on the date given. I expressed my fears to Biodun and he promised to fight with/for me. I was happy to have him by my side but i was scared of losing it all. I saw My kids as the reward for the hardship i went through, i couldn’t let go of either of them.
Biodun concluded that he would invite his lawyer friend over the next day. Though i was scared, Biodun promised me that everything was going to be fine and i took in his words.
****
The next day, Biodun’s lawyer friend (David) came over and we had a long talk over the court notice and my relationship with James.
He opened our eyes to things we did’nt know. At first, he made us realise that James suing me ment that he was ready to play it dirty with me and we must as well be prepared.
He asked if i had any criminal record or if i had anything to do with hard drugs and alcohol and i replied negatively.
The next important step he stated was my level of responsibility. According to him, James could win the case if he was able to prove that i was just a student who got pregnant in a foreign land without my parent knowledge. He could even make the court believe that i would not be capable of raising the kids in the right way.
My heart was broken when the lawyer elaborated on the danger i could face and how slim my chance of gaining custody of my kids could be.
I told the lawyer he could counter James if he also made the court realise that he was the irresponsible one. Since james neglected me throughout my pregnancy and child birth, he could be tagged as the irresponsible one. I went further to make it clear that it was Biodun that stood by me throughout my rough time and he is better off to call Biodun the father of my kids instead of James.
The lawyer took in my points but he explained how less useful it could be. According to him, James could accuse me of shutting him out and hooking up with Biodun even when i was pregnant with his child. He could even play the victim and make the court believe that i chose Biodun over him.
I was so lost and confused when i realised how things could turn out. The lawyer went on and on to tell us how James could paint me black and gain custody of his kids since he was their biological father. We were at a blocked edge when Biodun brought up the issue of the birth certificate. He reminded me of filling in his name as the kids father on the hospital record and he elaborated on how the hospital record and the birth certificate could be used against James.
The lawyer’s face brighten when he heard this and i was happy until he pointed out somethings. The lawyer made us realise that the certificate could be used against and in favour of us. According to him James could broaden how irresponsible i was by giving a total stranger the right to lawfully be the father of his kids and on the other hand it could be in my favour if i lawfully get married to Biodun. I can then then argue that i filled in Biodun’s name because he was there for me when James could not take responsibilities and Biodun was ready to be my kids step dad. By so doing, i would be able to establish the fact that James was irresponsible and Biodun, been the responsible man he was took responsibility for him. We would as well be able to give the girls the best upbringing.
Though the lawyer’s advice was valuable, getting married to Biodun was something i was’nt sure was right.
My kids were my first priorities and i went through alot without the knowledge of my parents but i could not imagine getting married without their consent.
I was more than confused…..

My kids were my first priorities and i went through alot without the knowledge of my parent but i could not imagine getting married without their consent.
I was more than confused.
****
It was as if the whole world was revolving around me. I was lost on what to do. I was given a lead plan on how i could win over James but i was’nt sure if it was the right step to take.
Biodun must have noticed my confused state as well. He told the lawyer that i would think about the whole plan and get back at him. Before The lawyer left, he made us realise that we should draw a conclusion in time because he would have to notify the registry beforehand.
Biodun saw the lawyer off and we were soon left alone with the kids. I thought about the whole scenario but i was too confused to draw a conclusion.
****
Though we took care of the babies together, myself and Biodun did’nt talk about the court case till later that night. I gussed he must have had lots to think about as well.
Later that night, after putting the girls to sleep, Biodun held my hand and led me to the livingroom. Knowing that he was going to start a conversation about the lawyer’s advice made me abit scared but i was ready to take in any response from him.
Biodun made me sit close to him and he asked what my conclusion was. I told him i was yet to draw a conclusion and i was’nt sure if getting married to him just so that i could gain custody of kids was the right thing to do.
I made Biodun realise that i wouldn’t love to inconvenience him further neither would i love to complicate his future just for the sake of my kids.
Biodun held my face and told me that he was inlove with the me and if having a complicated future is a necessity, he was more than ready for it.
Biodun’s words got to me and i could remember shedding tears. My tears made Biodun think that i did’nt want to get involve with him.
Biodun stood up and told me to do it for my kids if i couldn’t marry him because i loved him. He even suggested that we could get a divorce after a year or two.
I was speechless on how much Biodun was willing to give just for the sake of me and my children. I could not help but wish he was my first love and the biological father of my kids.
Right there and then, i confessed my love for Biodun and i also expressed my wish to get married with my parent’s consent. I made Biodun see how complicated things would be if my parent decide to come over for my wedding.
“How will i explain the kids presence to them?” was the question i asked biodun.
Biodun told me not to worry about my parent, he told me to concentrate on doing the right thing and with time, we would have the courage to inform our parents.
I agreed with Biodun and he asked if i was ready to be a fake bride or an original bride.
I chose to be an original bride and Biodun ran into the house. I was confused on what could have happened to him until he came back with his hand hidden in his pocket.
He knelt before me, pulled out a ring and popped in the question that left me blushing.

In The Dark “ A Story Of Love , Betrayal And Survival ” – Episode 2

I looked at my girls and all i felt was the joy of motherhood. Nothing can be more fulfilling.
There was a striking resemblance between the girls right from birth.
As a mother, i could not even point out a difference between the both of them, they were a set of identical twins.
After been cleaned up, i was asked to feed my kids. I could remember, shedding tears of joy as the girls sucked from my dry boobs. Everything was like a dream come through for me and i saw the girls as the reward for all the hardship i went through.
There and then promised myself that i wouldn’t let go of my girls for anything in the whole world.
I stayed back at the hospital for awhile after delivery. Biodun was the only one that stood by me throughout this period of time and he even scheduled his annual leave for that month. He would bring us breakfast in the morning, buy lunch in the afternoon and go home to make dinner at night. During this period of time the hospital practically became Biodun’s home. He found pleasure in playing with the girls while i would sleep. He also stayed with me during sleepless nights when the girls are crying. We would carry the girls and dance round the ward the way Nigerian mothers does. Whenever the girls fall asleep, Biodun would sleep in a one armed chair while my babies and I would sleep on the comfortable bed. I did’nt know how i was going to repay him but i am eternally grateful for his support.
After spending a week in the hospital, we were due for discharge. Before I was discharged, the birth certificates of my kids were issued to me and i was surprised to see Biodun’s name on it as their father. I enquired for the reason why Biodun included his name and he made me understand that he did’nt include his name because he wanted to claim my children but he was lost on whose name to give when the babies father name was requested for. So he filled in his name for the main time.
Biodun wanted to request for a change in name after explaining his reasons to me but i kicked against the idea. To me James was not worthy to be call the father of my children and even though Biodun was just a friend, he had done more than what a father could do.
I left the hospital without changing the name on the birth certificate. Biodun drove us home afterwards and we were awesomely welcomed by a surprise party.
****
The sight that welcomed me was pleasant when we arrived my apartment. Biodun had the whole interior decoration changed, he decorated the nursery and he even went to the extent of changing the furnitures. The whole apartment was sparkling. I did’nt know how biodun pulled the whole surprise off but he did it perfectly well.
Some of Biodun’s friends were present as well. I got gift from most of them and we had fun having a low key welcome party. Throughout the party, Biodun portrayed me as his girlfriend. He would whisper into my ears and touch me lightly on the cheek. Though i was happy to have him by my side, i was scared of falling for him as well.
At exactly 6:00pm, our guest exist the apartment and we were left to clean up the used dishes.
****
While washing the dishes, i to take a bold step by asking Biodun why he chose to stand by me. I selected my words carefully in order not to him or portray myself as an ungrateful soul.
After a long speech, I was able to convey my message to Biodun and his response was something i never imagined. Though the message was clear, it was hard to believe.
Biodun made me realise that he liked me the very day he set his eyes on me and the day i shared my story with him, he became more attracted to me. Though it was alittle crazy to be inlove with a lady who was carrying another man’s child,he decided to stick around and let fate decide the future. He also included that all he did was for my girls.
I agreed with Biodun’s decision to allow fate play it’s part and i also used the opportunity to thank him for all he had done.
Myself and biodun shared a kiss that day and we were eventually interrupted by the cries of my babies.
****
After two weeks of been discharged, my life started to take a new turn. Biodun added meaning to my life and existence. He represented the father i thought my kids would never have and he represented the family I left back home.
We found pleasure in doing everything together. Everything! including changing my babies napkins and watching them grow.
Having my girls, Biodun and my family, made my life beautiful.
I had the happiness i thought i had lost until one day.
****
I was about putting the girls to sleep when i heard a knock on my door. I gave the girls to Biodun and went for the door.
Standing in front of my door was a man in suit. He delivered a letter to me and i signed the delivery book.
I got the shock of my life when i read the content of the letter.
It was a court notice.
A notice that stated that i was sued by James.

The Secret Life of One of the Richest Men in the World

Carlos Slim, the richest man in Latin America and for several years, the world, has a surprising hero – the Mongol warlord Genghis Khan. Slim’s fascination with the medieval emperor even reflects in his business strategies. Genghis Khan would make tactical retreats, lulling his enemies into a false sense of security, before striking hard. The 75 year old telecoms tycoon Slim has been telling people he is retiring from business for the last 15 years, only to make a series of moves into new territory, most recently petroleum.
Slim’s admiration for the Great Khan is one of many intriguing details of the Mexican billionaire revealed in a new biography by investigative journalist Diego Enrique Osorno. In “Slim: The Political Biography of the Richest Mexican in the World,” it is also uncovered that the tycoon was bullied at his Mexico City school because he is the son of Lebanese parents, who had the original surname Salim. It is shown that his family had ties to the Lebanese Phalange, a right wing Christian group known for massacres of Palestinians. And it is documented how Slim’s older brother Julian was a member of a Mexican secret police force accused of torturing and disappearing leftist rebels.
Yet while digging relentlessly for any dirt that can be found, Osorno’s biography also paints the picture of a dignified and determined entrepreneur, a mathematical genius and dogged worker, who maintains a certain humility even as his wealth topped $77 billion. “It is not the story of a hero or a villain but of a human being with a mountain of contradictions,” Osorno tells TIME. “For some sectors of Mexican society (Slim) is an aspirational figure. It is a way that Mexico is triumphing, to have somebody with this level of wealth. But for another sector, he incarnates the enormous inequality of this country.”
Osorno began his probe all the way back in 2007, after spending years covering the struggles of Mexico’s poor and marginalized. Watching Slim’s fortune expand exponentially in the face of this was shocking, he says. “I was driven by a sense of injustice, by anger,” Osorno says. “How is it is possible that the same country that has all this poverty creates this character?” Slim kept on climbing to become the richest man on the entire planet from 2010 to 2013. He finally lost that title to Bill Gates, and Slim has seen his fortune reduced this year by the tumble of gold prices.
Despite Osorno’s outrage, his investigation led him to respect the entrepreneurial qualities of Slim and what he describes as his “permanent strategic vision.” Osorno spent four whole years fighting to get an interview with the billionaire, and Slim finally gave him three, telling his story over seven hours. “(Slim) said, ‘Don’t write too many lies about me,’ in a way that was between a threat and a joke,” Osorno says. “He said, ‘Why are you so interested in my admiration of Genghis Khan?’ And as he asked it, he explained some fascinating details about Genghis Khan.”
After graduating as an engineer, Slim made money as a stockbroker and private investor in everything from restaurants to construction companies to mines. But his fortune really took off in the 1990s, when he brought Mexico’s telephone monopoly from the government. Through aggressive maneuvers, including many court cases, Telmex dominated the Mexican phone market for years after privitization. Even today, it owns 70 percent of the nation’s fixed and mobile lines . Osorno says this lack of competition hurt the country, but that Slim did it by legal methods. “He knows how to read the system better than anybody else,” Osorno says.
Slim went on to buy telecoms companies across Latin America and beyond until his America Movil operated more than 300 million lines. He also continually buys into new ventures, including airlines, soccer teams, major U.S. retailers and the New York Times (he owns 16 percent) . In April, Slim formed his own oil and gas company. Osorno says that the billionaire is now driven by the idea of winning more than actually making money. “He says he doesn’t care about money,” Osorno says. “He says ‘This is my work, this is what makes my life sense, what motivates me to get up. If they take this away from me, I would feel dead.’ ”
Despite growing to respect Slim’s entrepreneurial qualities, Osorno still sees his triumph as emblematic of an unfair system that keeps many Mexicans in poverty, driving crime and violence. This system itself needs to change, for the nation to advance, he says. “The success of a few,” Osorno writes, “should not be at the cost of the failure of a entire country.”

Zuma under fire for sacking finance minister

Zuma under fire for sacking finance minister

South Africans have lashed out at President Jacob Zuma after he sacked Pravin Gordhan as finance minister. The opposition has called for a vote of no-confidence as the business community warns of economic repercussions.
President Jacob Zuma's cabinet reshuffle, and particularly the sacking of Pravin Gordhan as finance minister, has thrown the country into a political storm. Protest marches have been held in Pretoria and Cape Town with political parties, trade unions, NGOs and community leaders calling for Zuma's resignation.
Leaders of the Save South Africa movement, which organized the protests, have called on all South Africans to mobilize like they did during the anti-apartheid period. They are demanding that Zuma step down before he further damages the country.
South Africa has been hit by protests as a result of rising unemployment
South Africans who spoke to DW said the ministerial changes would have far-reaching consequences for the country's struggling economy.
Steven Dlamini, a resident of Durban described Zuma's move as "pathetic." "When you look at the rate of unemployment in South Africa, it is too high. It [Gordhan's sacking] is definitely going to affect the ordinary person," Dlamini said.
Paying for Zuma's mistakes
"In fact sooner or later, we are going to hear an increase in the price of petrol because of the president's wrongdoings," Dlamini added. "I think it is a very stupid thing to do. It's not good for the economy," Jacob Labuschange, another Durban resident, said. "Now all our imports are going to get a lot more expensive."
He said leaders in the country need to stand up and show that they are more concerned about the people than themselves. "Kick [Zuma] him out and get someone competent to run the country," Labuschange added.
South Africa's opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters, have also taken steps to have Zuma removed as president. The DA has submitted a motion to parliament calling for a vote of no-confidence. The DA has also filed a legal challenge to stop the new ministers from taking office. The EFF, for its part, has approached the Constitutional Court to compel parliament to act against Zuma. EFF leader Julius Malema has warned Zuma to prepare himself for impeachment.
The firing of the widely respected finance minister sent the South African rand tumbling by close to five percent. Business leaders who make up the CEO initiative were quoted on South Africa's online daily news24 as saying the sacking of Gordhan would deal a severe blow to the economy. The initiative was formed in 2016 to help steer South Africa back to economic growth and avoid further credit downgrades.
Gordhan hits back
While addressing the media on Friday after he was relieved of his duties, Pravin Gordhan, the former finance minister, said he and his former deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, had concentrated their efforts to promote economic stability, growth and the socio-economic advancement of all South Africans, especially the poor and marginalized.
In an obvious reference to the corruption allegations surrounding Zuma and the wealthy Indian Gupta business family, Gordhan said his soul and that of the country were not for sale. "Let me conclude by saying that for the last 15 - 16 months, we have been subjected to the most horrific attacks on the work that we do."
The Gupta brothers are accused of influencing President Jacob Zuma.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa also expressed his disapproval at the removal of Gordhan and Jonas, referring to the decision as "totally unacceptable."

Ramaphosa said he had had been opposed to the sacking of Minister Gordhan "because he was being removed on the basis of an intelligence report that I believe had unsubstantiated allegations about the minister of finance and his deputy." The allegations are that Gordhan and Mcebisi had gone to London to mobilize financial markets against South Africa.
Karima Brown, a political analyst in South Africa, told DW, Zuma had succumbed to the Guptas. "This explains the kind of influence the Gupta family has over the Zuma administration," Brown said. He said the new political development is a victory for the Guptas. "This is a Gupta coup."

Award-winning Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, wants women to be treated as though they have “ penis .” Adichie stated that her aim for feminism drive was to ensure that marriages change for good, and that women are treated same as “ someone who has penis .”
Speaking with The Guardian of London, the novelist noted that having a feminist label attached to her has changed things. She said,
“I was opened to a certain level of hostility that I hadn’t experienced before as a writer and public figure.”
The award-wining writer recounted her encounter with a young male admirer during an official outing in Nigeria.

Adichie said, “I used to love you. I’ve read all your books. But since you started this whole feminism thing, and since you started to talk about this gay thing, I’m just not sure about you any more. How do you intend to keep the love of people like me?”

In her response, she told the man, “Keep your love, because, sadly, while I love to be loved, I will not accept your love if it comes with these conditions.”

Jungle Justice: 4 Armed Robbers Burnt To Death By Angry Mob In Lagos (PHOTOS

A Nigerian man, Sky Joe residing in Lagos has shared the story and photos of how suspected Armed robbers were burnt alive by an angry mob after they were caught.
Joe Sky wrote:
Quote
"Ok, I posted Mercedes Benz and their ranges are the years passes bye just yesterday and begged my youths not to die for the new model for there will always be a new model.
Meanwhile these fellows disobeyed and decided to die for the maybe 2017 model while there will be a new model by next year so they st out for robbery, now they didn't make it because the law did not catch up with them but their fellow barbarians in human nature caught up with them, They have been burnt to ashes now by some aspiring arm robbers who are lucky not have guns on them today. Now these youths are gone all in the name of fast money while they could be handed over to the government to face the law, and maybe who knows they will learn their lessons and turn a new leave.
I am not supporting them for stealing but I am blaming this ones and you who sent in these pictures, why didn't you alert the police with the time you spent taking pictures to upload for likes and comments. Now what difference do you make of these lives wasted here? At the last day, ''If there be a last day'' Everyone must surely answer to the call. We are living in a country where barbarians wear cloths and lions have human face.
Once again Nigeria Ntooor."

Funny Testimony
Praise the Lort. Hmmm! It’s not a small something. Well, actually, it all started a two day ago, which i’m in my house, so a small hungry is catching me, so i look in the house nothing much to chop only small plantain which i’ve not fried before. So, i tell myself to fry it and chop, as i’m frying that plantain so, phone ringing, so i look, it’s a faring place, so i now run, which i reach there, it’s my father which call, so i now say, father call after, plantain frying. I keep it. So now, i now turn around, as i turn around, all of a suddenliness everywhere in my house have turn to smoke.
Children of God as i’m approaching, smoke is biging, smoke is just biging biging. It’s a fearing thing o!, if it’s you self, you’ll fearing. I shout Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! All of a miraculously, smoke start to be vanishing, to where? I no know. It’s a miracle thing. Smoke start to small, small, small. Then, my plantain have burn to ashes. Hallelujah.
But my main testimony today be say, i chop that charcoal and nothing happen to me, church praise the Lort”.

1. The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.
2. Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.
3. Some of the greatest poetry is revealing to the reader the beauty in something that was so simple you had taken it for granted.
4. Math is the language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos.
5. The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.
6. [It’s] curious that we spend more time congratulating people who have succeeded than encouraging people who have not.
7. We spend the first year of a child’s life teaching it to walk and talk and the rest of its life to shut up and sit down. There’s something wrong there.
8. One of the biggest problems with the world today is that we have large groups of people who will accept whatever they hear on the grapevine, just because it suits their worldview—not because it is actually true or because they have evidence to support it. The really striking thing is that it would not take much effort to establish validity in most of these cases…but people prefer reassurance to research.
9. With automatic spell checkers running unleashed over what we compose, our era is that of correctly spelled typos.
10. Lots of people think, well, we’re humans; we’re the most intelligent and accomplished species; we’re in charge. Bacteria may have a different outlook: more bacteria live and work in one linear centimeter of your lower colon than all the humans who have ever lived. That’s what’s going on in your digestive tract right now. Are we in charge, or are we simply hosts for bacteria? It all depends on your outlook.
11. If each dead person became a ghost, there’d be more than 100 billion of them haunting us all. Creepy, but cool.
12. Let us not fool ourselves into thinking we went to the Moon because we are pioneers, or discoverers, or adventurers. We went to the Moon because it was the militaristically expedient thing to do.
13. Knowing how to think empowers you far beyond those who know only what to think.
14. Creativity is seeing what everyone else sees, but then thinking a new thought that has never been thought before and expressing it somehow. It could be with art, a sculpture, music or even in science. The difference, however, between scientific creativity and any other kind of creativity, is that no matter how long you wait, no one else will ever compose “Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony” except for Beethoven. No matter what you do, no one else will paint Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” Only Van Gogh could do that because it came from his creativity.
15. Curiously, light-loving green plants reject the Sun’s green light, reflecting it back at you, which is why they look green.
16. There is no shame in not knowing. The problem arises when irrational thought and attendant behavior fill the vacuum left by ignorance.
17. But you can’t be a scientist if you’re uncomfortable with ignorance, because scientists live at the boundary between what is known and unknown in the cosmos. This is very different from the way journalists portray us. So many articles begin, “Scientists now have to go back to the drawing board.” It’s as though we’re sitting in our offices, feet up on our desks—masters of the universe—and suddenly say, “Oops, somebody discovered something!” No. We’re always at the drawing board. If you’re not at the drawing board, you’re not making discoveries. You’re not a scientist; you’re something else. The public, on the other hand, seems to demand conclusive explanations as they leap without hesitation from statements of abject ignorance to statements of absolute certainty.
18. Next time you’re stunned by [a] large moon on [the] horizon, bend over and view it between your legs. The effect goes away entirely.
19. Some air you inhale was exhaled by Cleopatra.
20. Kids are never the problem. They are born scientists. The problem is always the adults. They beat the curiosity out of kids. They outnumber kids. They vote. They wield resources. That’s why my public focus is primarily adults.
21. There’s a fascinating frailty of the human mind that psychologists know all about, called “argument from ignorance.” This is how it goes. Remember what the “U” stands for in “UFO?” You see lights flashing in the sky. You’ve never seen anything like this before and don’t understand what it is. You say, “It’s a UFO!” The “U” stands for “unidentified.” But then you say, “I don’t know what it is; it must be aliens from outer space, visiting from another planet.” The issue here is that if you don’t know what something is, your interpretation of it should stop immediately. You don’t then say it must be X or Y or Z. That’s argument from ignorance. It’s common. I’m not blaming anybody; it may relate to our burning need to manufacture answers because we feel uncomfortable about being steeped in ignorance.
22. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who divide everybody into two kinds of people and those who don’t.
23. So what is true for life itself is no less true for the universe: knowing where you came from is no less important than knowing where you are going.
24. Again and again across the centuries, cosmic discoveries have demoted our self-image. Earth was once assumed to be astronomically unique, until astronomers learned that Earth is just another planet orbiting the Sun. Then we presumed the Sun was unique, until we learned that the countless stars of the night sky are suns themselves. Then we presumed our galaxy, the Milky Way, was the entire known universe, until we established that the countless fuzzy things in the sky are other galaxies, dotting the landscape of our known universe. Today, how easy it is to presume that one universe is all there is. Yet emerging theories of modern cosmology, as well as the continually reaffirmed improbability that anything is unique, require that we remain open to the latest assault on our plea for distinctiveness: multiple universes, otherwise known as the “multiverse,” in which ours is just one of countless bubbles bursting forth from the fabric of the cosmos.
25. Just to settle it once and for all: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The egg, laid by a bird that was not a chicken.
26. Some morning while your eating breakfast and you need something new to think about, though, you might want to ponder the fact that you see your kids across the table not as they are but as they once were, about three nanoseconds ago.
27. Would a NASA reality show “Lunar Shore” be more popular than “Jersey Shore?” Civilization’s future depends on that answer.
28. After the 9/11 attacks, when President George W. Bush, in a speech aimed at distinguishing the U.S. from the Muslim fundamentalists, said, “Our God is the God who named the stars.” The problem is two-thirds of all the stars…have names have Arabic names. I don’t think he knew this. This would confound the point that he was making.
29. Once upon a time, people identified the god Neptune as the source of storms at sea. Today we call these storms hurricanes…The only people who still call hurricanes acts of God are the people who write insurance forms.
30. While shopping at the supermarket, most Americans aren’t surprised to find an entire aisle filled with sugar-loaded, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. But foreigners notice this kind of thing immediately, just as traveling Americans notice that supermarkets in Italy display vast selections of pasta and that markets in China and Japan offer an astonishing variety of rice. The flip side of not noticing your own culture is one of the great pleasures of foreign travel: realizing what you hadn’t noticed about your own country, and noticing what the people of other countries no longer realize about themselves.
31. Need a distraction today? Not only does 12 + 1 = 11 + 2, but the letters “twelve plus one” rearrange to give you “eleven plus two.”
32. Robots are important also. If I don my pure-scientist hat, I would say just send robots; I’ll stay down here and get the data. But nobody’s ever given a parade for a robot. Nobody’s ever named a high school after a robot. So when I don my public-educator hat, I have to recognize the elements of exploration that excite people. It’s not only the discoveries and the beautiful photos that come down from the heavens; it’s the vicarious participation in discovery itself.
33. Whether or not you can never become great at something, you can always become better at it. Don’t ever forget that. And don’t say, “I’ll never be good.” You can become better, and one day you’ll wake up and you’ll find out how good you actually became.
34. My view is that if your philosophy is not unsettled daily then you are blind to all the universe has to offer.
35. In five billion years, the sun will expand and engulf our orbit as the charred ember that was once Earth vaporizes. Have a nice day.

South Africa: The Manenberg school which is top of the class

South Africa: The Manenberg school which is top of the class
28 March 2017 Africa
Manenberg in Cape Town, South Africa, is infamous for its high crime rate, but it is now being associated with academic excellence, writes the BBC's Mo Allie.
Looking from the outside at The Leadership College (TLC) with its basic structure and its small classrooms, surrounded by sandy waste ground, it is hard to imagine that this is the same school that has managed consistently to deliver top-class results since its inception seven years ago.
Yet last year the school achieved a 92% pass rate in South Africa's national school-leaving examinations - far higher than the national average.
That performance is in stark contrast with a finding of the report by the Johannesburg-based Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE), which suggests large proportions of South Africa's graduating students are "functionally illiterate and innumerate".
The report found that South Africa - one of the continent's richest countries - was performing worse than many far poorer African nations in terms of educating its children.
How does TLC compare?
TLC's school-leaving exam pass rate: 92% in 2016
National average: 72.5%
Average pass rate in Manenberg: 71%
Cat Stevens
But what makes TLC's achievements even more remarkable is that it is located in Manenberg, a run-down area just 15 minutes from Cape Town's international airport, often in the news for the crime, gang violence and drug dealing that stalks its streets.
"The community itself and the township keep you down if you get into its lifestyle," says former head girl Thania Abrahams, who achieved five distinctions in last year's Matric exams.
"For me to rise above that, I had to focus on my goals."
Thania's results were good enough to get her enrolled for a degree in medicine at Stellenbosch University, one of the best tertiary institutions in South Africa.
She wasn't the only TLC student to win a place at Stellenbosch: Imraan Ismail got six distinctions and a place to study chartered accounting.
Of the 71 distinctions produced in Manenberg last year, all but three came from TLC.
TLC is a private school, run by the 2 Oceans Education Foundation, which counts Yusuf Islam, the singer previously known as Cat Stevens, among its patrons.
Thanks to its government and charitable funding, the area's academically gifted students can attend for free - even down to school excursions.
Many of TLC's learners come from tough backgrounds, broken homes together with a variety of socio-economic problems that plague the townships in which they live.
In 2015, no child accepted to TLC came from a household which earned more than 8,000 rand ($640; £510) a month.
About 90% of the students are Muslim but the founders stress it is open to all races and denominations.
Witnessing murders
But TLC does not just offer the opportunity to excel in the classroom.
The school serves as an oasis of tranquillity as it provides a safe space for the pupils who have free access there to psychologists and occupational therapists - something these children would never otherwise have access to.
The health professionals play a key role in helping the learners overcome their often traumatic circumstances which include witnessing murders, armed robberies, abusive relationships or simply a lack of affection at home.
Ashra Norton, TLC director:
"What I am particularly pleased about is that learners are now thinking about doing courses in areas like actuarial science, health, physical sciences and engineering."
However, one of the main reasons behind the success of TLC is the strict discipline coupled with the hard work put in by both pupils and teachers.
The school's navy and light blue uniform, which is given free of charge to each of the pupils, plays an important part in creating an identity and sense of togetherness in a community where gangs have filled that vacuum for many youngsters.
Meanwhile, the school organizes extra lessons in maths and science, as well as in any other subjects that pupils find problematic, over weekends and sometimes during the week for those in their final year.
"Although I'm very happy, I'll feel even better if all the other schools in Manenberg could get similar results," says TLC director Ashra Norton, who grew up in the area.
'Hard work and determination'
The school is doing its part here as well, however: TLC hosts joint tuition programmes with other schools in the area in an effort to help pupils keep up with their work.
The 2 Oceans Education Foundation is involved with six other schools in Cape Town, most of them in the poorer townships.
Its most recent involvement is with Langa High School, located in Cape Town's oldest black township, which had a Matric pass rate of just 34% last year.
"There is no quick fix solution," Mrs Norton says. "It requires hard work and determination to survive against extraordinary odds. We have a very strong intervention programme in the school starting from their first year in grade eight."
The programme includes providing daily sandwiches or meals that are sometimes provided by sponsors to nearly half of the 625 pupils who come from economically deprived homes.
The school has managed to raise the bar for pupils who are now aiming much higher than their parents could ever have dreamed of.
"What I am particularly pleased about is that learners are now thinking about doing courses in areas like actuarial science, health and physical sciences and engineering which was unheard of a few years ago," says Mrs Norton.

Buhari hails outstanding polician Tinubu at 65

President: he helped to unseat incumbent
Adeosun hints of aggressive tax drive
‘Young businesses should be encouraged’
It was a day of encomiums — and serious talks — yesterday in Lagos.
Statesmen, eminent politicians, top government officials, military chiefs, captains of industry and traditional rulers joined relations and associates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his 65th birthday in Lagos.
At the colourful ceremony, which was witnessed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), his wife, Dolapo, and 12 governors, President Muhammadu Buhari extolled Tinubu’s virtues, describing him as an “outstanding” politician and “a man of foresight”, who helped to unseat the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.
The former governor of Lagos State, to President Buhari, is “a great mobiliser, a man of action and an effective formulator of sound policies”.  He recalled that Tinubu dedicated himself to the transformation of Lagos.
The President said: “Chief Bola Tinubu is an outstanding Yoruba politician of his generation.”
The Eko Hotel Hall, the venue of the Ninth Bola Tinubu Colloquium, was filled to the brim. Its theme was: “Make it in Nigeria: Use what we make; make what we use”.
As from 7.30 am, the venue was aglow with festivities. Itinerant Yoruba drummers and singers welcomed guests with talking drums and cultural songs. Political differences temporarily disappeared as APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains converged to honour the celebrator.
Speakers at the colloquium included the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who spoke on efforts by the Air force to produce aircraft softwares locally, instead of relying on imports at exorbitant cost, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah shed light on the Federal Government’s effort to provide an enabling environment for investors. His Finance counterpart, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, announced plans by the government to embark on an aggressive tax drive targeted at rich Nigerians and business organisations fond of tax evasion.
There was a documentary on the Tinubu political ascendancy. Another was on the growth of indigenous entrepreneurship and testimonies of successful business development by promising entrepreneurs. They included the Leader of SOCART Team, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Mr. Abraham Issac, the Chairman of IVM Innoson Group, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, Chief Executive Officer of CDS, Chinwe Ohajuruka, Tempo Housing managing Partner David Aderounmu, Founder of Wilson’s Juice Company Limited Seun Abolaji, Chief Executive Officer of Bathkandy Mrs. Blondie Okpuzor, Co-founder of AACE Foods Ndidi Nwuneli, Chief Executive Officer of Chocolate City Jude Abaga and Chief Executive Officer of Biola Alabi Media Mrs Biola Alabi.
Tinubu strolled into the venue around 10.30am. Hale and hearty, he was accompanied by his wife, Senator Oluremi, the host governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, his wife, Bolanle, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule and former Deputy Governor, Chief Olufemi Pedro.
Dignitaries included former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Governors Bello Masari (Katsina State), Sam Lalong (Plateau), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), and Abubakar Bello (Niger).
There were also former Anambra State Governor’s Jim Nwobodo and Peter Obi, former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, former Benue State Governor George Akume, former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande, his wife, Alhaja Abimbola, former Ogun State governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, former Ekiti State Governor Adeniyi Adebayo, business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Rasak Okoya, Chief Kessington Adebutu, former Lagos State Deputy governors Sarah Sosan, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye and Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, former Ogun State Deputy Governor Segun Adesegun, retired Supreme Court Justice George Oguntade, Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu, Emir of Borgu Alhaji Haliru Dantoro II, Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, House of Representatives Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila and Managing Director of Nigeria Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman.
Also there were Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, his deputy Wasiu Esinlokun-Sanni, Secretary to Lagos State Government Tunji Bello, Senator Joel Ikenya from Taraba State, Senator Sali Abu, APC National Secretary Mai Buni, APC National Vice Chairman (Southwest) Chief Pius Akinyelure, Alhaji Kashim Imam, former Ministers of State for Defence Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Ademola Seriki, Lagos APC elders Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Oba Olatunji Hamzat, Otunba Busura Alebiosu, Senator Tony Adefuye, Prince Murphy Adetoro, Alhaji Mutiu Are, Pa Abiodun Sunmola, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Chief Akanni Seriki-Bamu, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, one-time Lagos State Finance Commissioner Wale Edun; Senators Babajide Omoworare, Sola Adeyeye, Gbenga Obadara, Adeola Olamilekan, Babafemi Ojudu, Gbenga Ashafa, Third Republic House of Representatives Chief Whip Olawale Oshun, eminent scholar Prof. Adebayo Williams, presidential Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and House of Representatives members Jide Jimoh, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, James Faleke and former Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Dele Alake.
Noting the contributions of Asiwaju Tinubu towards the transformation of Lagos State, President Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazzu (retd.), said his associates, including Osinbajo and Ambode, had worked for the state’s economic and social regeneration.
The President also pointed out that Lagos has now become one of the cleanest states in the country, owing to the renewal programmes of the state government.
He saluted Tinubu’s intellectual capacity, hard work,  attention to details and ability to picking the right person for the right job.
Describing the theme of the colloquium as “very apt”, President Buhari said it was desirable that Nigeria should look inward and develop its economy through the rejection of unnecessary imports and production of goods for home consumption.
He said the Federal Government was already putting policies in place to encourage small and medium scale enterprises to promote locally produced goods.
Adeosun, who said Nigeria was set to put the economic recession behind it, recalled that the Federal Government had released N1 trillion for capital expenditure to foster a productive economy,
The finance minister praised Tinubu for his “foresight” and “sense of direction”, adding that the economic template being replicated by the Federal Government was copied from Lagos State.
She said: “The economic template we copied from you is now being implemented for the economic recovery of the country and we are not ashamed to say it. The impact of that template is that many of the states are now copying it, especially in the area of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).”
Lamenting the shrinkage of revenue earnings, owing to the slide in oil price, Mrs. Adeosun said Nigeria needed a multiple streams of revenue and a migration from an unproductive economy to a productive economy.
She added: “We need to support the economy with the infrastructure needed to create jobs for our young people. We will change Nigeria by consuming what we make for Nigeria to survive.”
The minister, who noted that Lagos was working because of its effective tax mechanism, said nobody could blame the state for collecting tax.
Giving hints about an aggressive tax drive targeted at the rich, Mrs. Adeosun said the Federal Government will insist on the collection of its rightful tax from evasive rich citizens and corporate organisations.
Ambode, who applauded Tinubu for his contributions to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria, likened him to a coconut from which multiple products for varied uses are extracted.
He described the former governor as a strategist who is “versatile” and “courageous”, adding that Tinubu is a made-in-Nigeria political product.
Ambode said: “Like the coconut, some by-products and fruits will get bad along the way or after being sold in the market. In actual fact, the political product may not be the favourite of some other people. The bottom line, however, is simple. If Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu were a coconut; I dare say, with all simplicity, I would be among the forefront liners that will eat, drink and sleep Bola Ahmed Tinubu 24/7.
“There is no doubt the Asiwaju political dynasty is a made-in-Nigeria product. The foundation laid and blueprints developed during his tenure as governor of Lagos State, which cuts across all sections of the state’s economy, have actually simplified the process of governance till date.
“His blueprint has continued to serve as a road map to achieving the Lagos of his and our dreams. This same political product, without doubt, traverses the Nigerian landscape and that is evident with the emergence of the APC at the centre in 2015. Asiwaju is a made-in-Nigeria product. We should make more products out of him.”
Ambode said the theme of the colloquium was apt, stressing that the partnership between Lagos and Kebbi state, which culminated in the production of the Lake Rice, bore eloquent testimony to the capacity of the country to become a productive nation.
He assured all that his administration would continue to improve on the indices of ease of doing business to facilitate the manufacturing of locally made products.
Thanking the guests for turning up to honour him, Tinubu said he was happy to celebrate his birthday with a colloquium that has drawn attention to pressing national challenges.
He praised the President and the Vice President for working as a team, recalling that when President Buhari temporarily transferred power to his deputy in accordance with the constitution, Osinbajo performed admirably as a loyal subordinate.
Tinubu reflected on the state of the economy, urging the Federal Government to press forward in its national industrial policy and national infrastructural plan.
He lent his voice to the crusade for a productive economy, saying: “Not only must we use what we make and make what we use, we must fix our minds to make what the world values.”
He acknowledged that the Buhari administration had started the process of economic renewal, adding that the reforms to salvage the economy should be supported by Nigerians.
The former governor also advised the Federal Government to bring back the giant manufacturing firms that had left the country through novel incentives and creation of a conducive climate.
Tinubu said young entrepreneurs should be nurtured, encouraged and assisted to succeed in a bid to harvest their talents for national productivity.
Alluding to the positive side of the huge population of the country, he said: “Our task is not to lament their great number, but to reform the political economy in a manner that puts them to productive work.”
Urging Nigeria to emulate either England, United States or China in its quest for economic revival, he said no populous modern nation could attain prosperity without creating an industrial base capable of generating employment and a manufacturing base for the production of goods for domestic consumption.
Tinubu expressed reservations about the survival of an import-driven economy, wondering why Nigeria was importing goods that could be produced locally, including newsprints.
He said Nigeria has competent hands to man its industrial sector, adding that expatriates can only be invited, not to dislodge them, but to give a helping hand.
Noting that the monopoly of power generation has been broken through his unprecedented example of investment in the sector as governor of Lagos State, Tinubu implored the Federal Government to embrace other forms of power generation.
Tinubu added: “A national economy cannot grow beyond the capacity of the infrastructure that serves it. We must conquer the economic, political and bureaucratic bottlenecks preventing us from achieving affordable, reliable electric power.”
